About Us

Our Story

Queer Earth was born out of a transformative experience at the AGU Fall Meeting in December 2023. During the conference, our founder, Theron, brought a group of students who were presenting their research. As the days went on, we discovered something remarkable: the majority of us in the group identified as LGBTQ. What followed was an outpouring of support, shared stories, and a deep sense of connection that many of us had never experienced before in the earth and environmental sciences.

For the first time, we felt truly seen and empowered, building a sense of community that was both healing and validating. We realized that this feeling of belonging—something we had often been denied in academic and professional spaces—was essential to our growth and success as scientists.

It became clear to us that others like us needed to experience this same sense of support, belonging, and empowerment. Queer Earth was created with the goal of offering opportunities for LGBTQIA2S+ scientists to connect, share, and thrive, without the barriers of exclusion and discrimination.

Our journey began with a small group, but our vision is large: to create a lasting, inclusive space where LGBTQIA2S+ all earth and environmental scientists can find community, access resources, and be uplifted as their full, authentic selves. Together, we are building something we never had before, and we are excited to grow this movement with you.

Our Mission

Queer Earth’s mission is to empower and support LGBTQIA2S+ earth and environmental scientists by providing professional development and training opportunities, networking, financial support through grants and scholarships, and mentorship. Guided by the principles of justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and informed by community input, we work to break down barriers and foster a community where all members can thrive and feel seen and valued as their full, authentic selves.

Our Vision

Our vision is to create a community where LGBTQIA2S+ earth and environmental scientists, including and especially those with intersecting identities, are fully represented, valued, and empowered to achieve their highest potential. We envision a future where justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility are fundamental, ensuring that all members can thrive both personally and professionally, free from discrimination. Through the elimination of barriers and the creation of robust networks of support, we aim to build a community that recognizes, celebrates, and uplifts the contributions of LGBTQIA2S+ scientists, paving the way for future generations.

Our Values

  1. Inclusivity: We celebrate and uplift the diverse identities within the LGBTQIA2S+ community, ensuring all voices are heard and respected.
  2. Community: We foster a strong sense of belonging, solidarity, and support among LGBTQIA2S+ scientists, building connections that last.
  3. Empowerment: We provide the resources, opportunities, and mentorship that enable our members to thrive and lead in their fields.
